Strengthening Early Grade Reading and Mathematics in Eswatini Primary Schools (Grades 1-3)
Addressing the low quality of education, particularly in rural areas in Eswatini.

At OpenDevEd, we are committed to advancing equity and addressing marginalisation through inclusive, evidence-driven interventions in both education and climate resilience. In hot climate regions, we co-design sustainable, low-cost solutions to improve thermal comfort in classrooms, such as reflective roofing, ensuring that marginalised learners, including children with disabilities and those in informal settlements, can learn in safe and conducive environments despite increasing climate pressures.
In Eswatini, we support the national Early Grade Reading and Mathematics (EGRM) programme with a strong focus on reaching underserved learners in remote and low-income communities. Using Design-Based Implementation Research (DBIR) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), we develop inclusive teacher training, curriculum materials, and adaptive assessment tools to support diverse learning needs. Across both projects, we prioritise systemic change that embeds inclusion, challenges structural barriers, and ensures all children, especially those most often left behind, can access quality learning opportunities and thrive.
We work across diverse educational landscapes to develop evidence-based solutions. Explore our initiatives on Marginalisation and Equity:
